Members of the Black Lives Matter Youth Group of Oklahoma have declared that their lives and education matter.

So, the group held a children’s march Sunday afternoon at F.D. Moon Middle School. The march continued down Martin Luther King Avenue to Douglass Stadium, 900 N. Martin Luther King Ave., where a news release says, “they will state their case for justice and make sure their voices are heard.”

According to the news release, the march was conceived and organized by children, some as young as 10, who walk in the footsteps of Mrs. Clara Luper and her students who held the nation’s first sit-ins in the 1960s.

The march was sponsored by Black Lives Matter and cosponsored by Oklahoma City Public Schools and the Millwood School district, officials said.

“Our young folks will also honor Black fathers, including the father of Isaiah Lewis, murdered by the Edmond Police Department a year ago, and other Fathers in the fight for civil and human rights,” the news release says.

The children involved in the march presented the following demands:

End Zero-Tolerance policies.
Increase hiring of Black, Indigenous and Latinx teachers and administrators in Oklahoma public schools.
Increase state funding of schools, including sustainable salaries for teachers, support personnel, and administrators.
Add African American, Latinx and Indigenous Studies to the curricula in Oklahoma public schools.
Removal of armed police from school.
