This statue of St. John the Baptist is located on the west side of St. John the Baptist Church on the corner of West 26th and Wallace Streets in Erie, PA. The statue depicts St. John holding a reed in the shape of a cross and a shell, common symbols of his roles as the forerunner of Christ and baptizer. There is a small garden surrounding the statue.

St. John the Baptist, son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, and cousin of Jesus, is considered by Christians to be the forerunner of Christ, the one who was to "prepare the way for the Lord." He is mentioned in all four Gospels. John preached repentance and baptized in the Jordan River. He even baptized Jesus, although he said that it was Jesus who should be baptizing him. St. Luke quotes Jesus as saying, "Amongst those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist" (Luke 7:28). John was beheaded by King Herod after he rebuked the King for marrying the wife of his brother. St. John is celebrated with two feast days in the Catholic calendar, his nativity on June 24th and his beheading on August 29th.
