My Commentary:
This is an incredibly breathtaking church in the northern part of town, as well as a very well-kept cemetery and Chapel. I was diverted through New Vienna because of road construction so finding this church complex was an unexpected treat. The church is in excellent repair and the cemetery, across the parking lot from the church was a nice respite from my drive. This was definitely worth the stop.

The St. Boniface of New Vienna Historic District is locally significant under Criterion C because it contains some of the best examples of late Victorian architectural design in this community, ranging from the Gothic to the Queen Anne. Most of the buildings are constructed of high quality stone or brick and exhibit a high degree of craftsmanship in their design and construction. At least two buildings - the church and the rectory - were designed by Matthias Schnell, a Rock Island, Illinois architect, who won considerable renown for his high style Gothic and Romanesque churches in the Midwest.

-National Registry Entry

A district centered on a Gothic Revival church, including a cemetery, mausoleum, museum, rectory and a stone water tower. The school, across the road from the church, was demolished in 2014. The school, which had been in operation over 120 years, closed due to low enrollment. The abandoned building was demolished and the site appears to be a parking lot.

The church features five carved altars and a 200' spire which includes a four-faced clock and three bells. A modern entry was added in 2010. Not only ADA compliant, the new entry filled a sinkhole that could have ruined the church.
