These carved oak panels which are said to have originally served as pew ends (possibly for the Drake or Cole families) sometime in the Tudor period.
At some time they were removed from the pews and made into this screen which stood in front of the tower. You can see there is a keyhole and door for the screen. The various carvings are of some profile heads, amongst other mysterious figures, including a dolphin, a Green Man, cherubs, mermaids and a host of other weird beasts, including what looks like a pixie. This is in keeping with Dartmoor folklore - the sort of things that one would about the place.
Although the screen panels are believed to date from the Tudor period, the actual frame may be far older. The type of joint used in the frame corners are of a style used in the late saxon period.
