Columbus Elementary School served the area around South Pennsylvania Ave and SW 24th St for somewhere near 100 years. It was closed after the 2013-14 school year, leaving around 550 students, faculty and staff to transfer to other schools nearby.

Since closing, the school has been ravaged by vandals, and has had at least nine fires set inside. The school district and city are working to sell these old schools for re-development.
