Location Information

Bondues is a town in the departement Nord, 15 kilometres north-north-east of Lille. From the church in Bondues, head south-east on the Rue Bosquel. At the traffic lights turn right. Bondues Communal Cemetery will be found on the left hand side of the road 50 metres from the traffic lights. The Commonwealth War Graves plot is situated in the top left hand corner of the cemetery.

National Union of Combattants of Bondues

1 British soldiers died on our soil in 1940 During the last wars, there was in all cemeteries of North of France, an area for the graves of soldiers allies, died in fighting on the French territory. It is the case in Bondues, where the cemetery has an alignment of 11 graves of British soldiers, all died in May 1940 in badly known conditions. On each white stone stele are engraved the name of the soldier, his rank, his army number, date of death and his age. Then appears the name of his regiment and emblem it represents. In accordance with custom the British families have respectively engraved a few words on the stele of their husband or their son, bringing a more human style. The Unknown Soldier is placed at the end of the row.

Bondues est une ville du département du Nord, à 15 kilomètres au nord-nord-est de Lille. Depuis l'église de Bondues, dirigez-vous vers le sud-est sur la rue Bosquel. Aux feux, tournez à droite. Le cimetière communal de Bondues se trouve sur le côté gauche de la route, à 50 mètres des feux de circulation. Le terrain des sépultures de guerre du Commonwealth est situé dans le coin supérieur gauche du cimetière.

Lors des dernières guerres, il y avait dans tous les cimetières du Nord de la France, une zone pour les tombes des soldats alliés, morts lors des combats sur le territoire français. C'est le cas à Bondues, où le cimetière a un alignement de 11 tombes de soldats britanniques, tous morts en mai 1940 dans des conditions mal connues. Sur chaque stèle de pierre blanche sont gravés le nom du soldat, son grade, son numéro d'armée, la date du décès et son âge. Apparaît alors le nom de son régiment et l'emblème qu'il représente. Conformément à la coutume, les familles britanniques ont respectivement gravé quelques mots sur la stèle de leur mari ou de leur fils, apportant un style plus humain. Le soldat inconnu est placé à la fin de la rangée.
