Under an iron cover marked "SURVEY MON", 78H7539 was monumented near the western edge of Park Street, about 50 metres south of Crescent Avenue, on a line east from 2nd Avenue. It is one whose cover is firmly affixed, refusing to reveal the marker beneath.
Rossland, home of Olympic Gold Medalist
Nancy Greene, is a high mountain town and, as such it receives a lot of snow. Its best known local attraction in the winter is
Red Mountain Resort, a renowned ski resort. In the summer Rossland attracts mountain bikers from around the world to test their sills and stamina on the world class mountain bike trails surrounding the town. With all that snow inevitably comes lots of sand on the streets through the winter. Come spring and melting snow, much of that sand washes into the many benchmark valve boxes arrayed on the streets. The result is that all become filled to overflowing with sand and silt. Many (most?) become impossible to open without the use of power tools. So, most of markers submitted in Rossland include photos of the valve box, but not the actual benchmark beneath. Each is stamped
British Columbia Control Survey. The datasheets suggest that the series are intended for horizontal control. The iron covers are stamped "
SURVEY MON".
