A sign, sponsored by the Medina County Historical Society, lists by row, all who are interred here. There are many different styles of grave markers here. Many of which are in German.
An iron cross, placed in 1884 reads:
Hier
Ruth
In
Gott
Jos. & An. Mr. Carle
Gest
1884
From Find a Grave we learn this is the marker for a husband and wife:
Francois Joseph Carle
Born 2 Oct 1805
Sainte-Croix-en-Plaine, Departement du Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France
Died 21 Jan 1884 (aged 78)
Anne Marie Mueller Carle
Born 25 Nov 1809
Biltzheim, Departement du Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France
Died 5 Feb 1884 (aged 74)
A Texas Historical Marker in front of the church ruins tells:
Site of Saint Dominic Catholic Church and Cemetery
Congregation formed in 1847 with founding of D'Hanis Colony by settlers from Alsace, France.
In 1853, when town became a mission parish, limestone church was built, using timber hauled by ox-wagon from Medina River.
Sandstone extension was built in 1868 upon arrival of first resident pastor but abandoned after 1914 when new church was built in "New" D'Hanis (1.5 miles west).
Cemetery, dating from burial of child of colonists in 1847, was used until 1893, when new cemetery was started following diphtheria epidemic. (1972)
