From Find A Grave: United States Navy Admiral. He was Chief of Naval Operations from December 15, 1947 to November 2, 1949. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1912. During World War I he was assigned to a destroyer force base at Queentown, Ireland. He commanded a submarine from 1923 to 1924. He was Chief of Staff and aide to the commander of the Atlantic Fleet Support Force during World War II and was named Chief of the Bureau of Naval Personnel at the end of the war. He was relieved as Chief of Naval Operations on November 2, 1949 by President Harry Truman over the administration's defense plans. He retired in 1950.
