Third time was a charm because that time we had the foresight to bring along the metal detector. Benchmark 861-J had been hiding under some leaves, moss and other jetsam, but couldn't hide from the metal detector.
861-J was monumented in 1931 in the top of a rock outcrop on a hill to the northwest of the Cascade/Laurier border crossing, south of Christina Lake. It was finally found 200 feet north and 170 feet west of Border Road. Border Road parallels Highway 395 here, but on the west side of the railway tracks.
