The tabernacle and the altarpiece of the main altar of the church were commissioned in 1652 from Mathieu Le Pilleu to adorn the chapel of the Jesuit college in Périgueux. After the demolition of this chapel in 1808, the altarpiece was reassembled in 1811 in the north apse of the Saint-Front cathedral.
"This altarpiece evokes the history of the Assumption of Mary in its central part according to the account of Jean Damascène. In the lower part, the apostles surround the tomb of Marie which they found empty. An apostle, perhaps Saint Thomas , arms raised, looks at the Assumption of the Virgin called by her Son who is represented above and holds a crown.
Above was carved the IHS monogram held by two angels. The Annunciation was represented there with, on either side, the Archangel Gabriel, and, on the right, Marie.
Father Audierne wrote in his Monumental, Statistical, Picturesque and Historical Guide to the Dordogne that Mary has the face of Anne of Austria, which may recall the wish of Louis XIII who consecrated his kingdom to the Virgin Mary after the birth of Louis XIV, in 1638. The costumes are those of the time of Louis XIII. "

Le tabernacle et le retable du maître-autel de l'église sont commandés en 1652 à Mathieu Le Pilleu pour orner la chapelle du collège des Jésuites de Périgueux. Après la démolition de cette chapelle en 1808, le retable a été remonté en 1811 dans l'absidiole nord de la cathédrale Saint-Front.
" Ce retable évoque l'histoire de l'Assomption de Marie dans sa partie centrale selon le récit de Jean Damascène. En partie basse, les apôtres entourent le tombeau de Marie qu'ils ont trouvé vide. Un apôtre, peut-être saint Thomas, les bras levés regarde l'Assomption de la Vierge appelée par son Fils qui est représenté au-dessus et tient une couronne.
Au-dessus a été sculpté le monogramme IHS tenu par deux anges. L'Annonciation y a été représentée avec, de part et d'autre, à gauche, l'archange Gabriel, et, à droite, Marie.
L'abbé Audierne a écrit dans son Guide monumental, statistique, pittoresque et historique de la Dordogne que Marie a le visage d'Anne d'Autriche, ce qui peut rappeler le vœu de Louis XIII qui consacre son royaume à la Vierge Marie après la naissance de Louis XIV, en 1638. Les costumes sont ceux de l'époque de Louis XIII. "
