The building:
In 1574, Vlaardingen burned to the ground, including the former town hall.
It was not until 1650 that master builder Bartholomeus Drijffhout completed a new 'Stedehuys' in Vlaardingen, built in the Renaissance style. In 1825 the walls were plastered and the stained glass windows and shutters removed.
In 1913, the building was restored to its former glory and expanded several times since then. During the restoration in 2001, the old bells - looted by the Germans in World War II - were replaced.
It had hung in the Bethel church tower from 1947 to 1996.

Vlaardingen is best known as the herring city in the Netherlands. However, fishing (for herring, anchovies and cod) is a thing of the past. However, the fishing history, particularly around the Oude Haven and the Queen Wilhelminahaven, is still clearly recognizable. A monument on the Grote Visserijplein by Govert van Brandwijk recalls the many fishermen who lost their lives at sea.
Vlaardingen is located on the Nieuwe Maas, west of Schiedam, south of Delft and Midden-Delfland (Schipluiden) and east of Maassluis and Maasland. Vlaardingen mainly consists of an urban area, with the exception of the polder area to the west and north of the city (partly set up as a recreation area) and the Broekpolder.
