In 1879, Monsignor Elzear Brochu, a Southbridge pastor in failing health, pledged to St. Anne that if he were to regain his strength, he would propagate her devotion by building a shrine in her honor. Upon recovery he purchased the land and created a church and a shrine on church grounds. Pilgrims came to the shrine in hopes of a cure.
The largest feature of the shrine is a 68 step stairway known as the Pilgrims Steps. At the top of the steps is huge crucifix at which pilgrims come to pray. A central stairway leads to three landings before dividing into a central main stairway and two side stairways. Fieldstone walls with light fixtures flank the steps and there is a central iron bannister.
