Shortly after Andrew Jackson’s death in 1845, proposals were put forward to erect a monument in the nation’s capital to the seventh President and founder of the Democratic Party. In 1848, self-taught sculptor Clark Mills received the commission for the Jackson statue to be erected in Lafayette Park in front of the White House. This became the first bronze statue cast in the United States and the first equestrian statue in the world that was balanced entirely on the horse’s hind legs.

Around this same time, the state of Tennessee also wanted to erect a statue of Jackson in Nashville since ‘Old Hickory’ made his home nearby at the Hermitage and had represented Tennessee in Congress. But the state was strapped for cash as they were in the midst of building their new capitol at that time. They were subsequently set back by the Civil War, so it wasn’t until 1879 that the Tennessee Historical Society decided to order a copy of Mills’ statue to be unveiled during Nashville’s centennial in 1880. (The city of New Orleans had previously erected a copy of this statue in their central square in 1856.)

Tennessee became a state in 1796 and celebrated its bicentennial in 1996. The stamp shows a dramatic photo of the east side of the capitol building at night including the Jackson statue. This is the second stamp to show the Tennessee Capitol which was designed by William Strickland and is considered to be his masterpiece.
