The Oklahoma Film and Television Academy is moving into a Spencer building that used to be Green Pastures Elementary School.

The school closed in May as part of Oklahoma City Public School's Pathway to Greatness plan, but the doors will reopen next month after the board voted to sell the building.

"We're going to work hard and fast to get it looking really pretty," said Melodie Garneu, president of Green Pastures Studios.

Starting next month, the Oklahoma Film and Television Academy will offer adult courses in set design, lighting and post production. The academy also will offer an on-set experience to younger students.

"We're geared toward people who are retiring or leaving the military or people who are carpenters who want to get into the film business," Garneau said.

According to Garneua, Green Pastures Studio will work the next few weeks to renovate the former elementary school into several soundproof studios and larger classrooms. Garneau said she believes Oklahoma is on its way to becoming a competitive force in the film industry.

"Atlanta went from $400 million to $9 billion in less than 10 years. We can do that," Garneau said.

People who want to register can do so on the Oklahoma Film and Television Academy's website.
