Description:
From Find A Grave: United States Marine Corps Brigadier General, US Congressman. Entering the United States Marine Corps in 1923, he was commissioned an officer in 1925, later was promoted Captain, reported to Pearl Harbor in January 1941 and as a Major, assumed command of the 1st Marine Defense Battalion, on Wake Island. With the out break of World War II, he received the message that Pearl Harbor had been attacked by the Japanese. For 15 days he defended Wake Island, with his command until forced to surrender to the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war until released from the Hokkaidō Island on September 15, 1945. After the war, for his duty at Wake Island, he was awarded the Navy Cross Medal, rose to rank of Brigadier General and concluded his 25 year career retiring on August 1, 1948. Entering politics, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving (1951-59). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was director of public safety for Baltimore County Maryland, (1962-66).
