This house was home to Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, and his family from 1844 till his death in 1865.

In the late 1830s, a self-taught Abraham Lincoln began practicing law in Springfield, Illinois. Newly married and with a young son, the Lincolns moved into this house on May 2, 1844. 150 years later, the U.S. Postal Service issued this postal card in commemoration of that event, albeit on Feb. 12, which is of course the former President’s birthday.
When the Lincolns moved in, the house was only five years old and about half its current size. As Lincoln’s family grew, the house was expanded to include a full second floor and a rear extension. In 1861, the Lincolns sold their furniture, rented out their house, left their dog with a neighbor and headed for the White House in Washington D.C. They were never to return.
Today, the entire neighborhood surrounding the Lincoln home has been restored to its 1860s appearance. The area is administered by the National Park Service and several of the houses are open to the public besides the Lincoln home.
