An Edmond business has a lot of cleaning up to do after police said a 12-year-old stole a car and led police on a chase that ended in a crash overnight, Thursday.

Police say early Thursday morning the victim left their car running while they ran inside their home to grab a hat. That’s when officers say the 12-year-old saw the opportunity, hopped in the car and took off with several other minors.

Somewhere along the way, the driver let out the rest of the kids in the car and kept driving. Eventually police caught up with the suspect and started the chase. Edmond officers say the suspect reached speeds up to 90 mph during the pursuit.

Around 1 a.m. the suspect crashed at strip mall in Downtown Edmond near North Broadway Avenue and West Hurd Street, leaving a path of destruction behind.

A rock wall that once stood at the Evans and Davis law firm was crumbled to the sidewalk. The businesses glass door was shattered to pieces, and the lights lining the sidewalk were either down or barely left standing.

Officers said the suspect was taken to the hospital to get checked out, but is expected to be okay.
