During the 1930s and early 1940s, over 400 new post offices were constructed across America under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, one of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal programs. Many of these public works projects also included artistic embellishment which, in the case of the post offices, usually took the form of a mural in the lobby. This mural, entitled “Air Mail” was painted by artist Dan Rhodes and completed in 1941.

In 2019, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of five stamps depicting various depression-era post office murals. The five designs illustrated the diversity of the subject matter of the murals which ranged from local history, culture and industry to various aspects of mail service.
