The construction of this church started in 1856, after an earthquake razed the previous cathedral of Salta. The architect was Felipe Bertrés, who designed a Baroque plan for it.

It became ready for worship in 1882. By that time the Archbishop was José Eusebio Colombres.

It keeps the ashes of several mnotorious Argentinians, including General Martín Miguel de Güemes, an independence hero.

It was designated a national monument in 1942. it's perhaps at its best after dark, when it's illuminated.
