An historical marker erected by the Massachusetts Bay Colony Tricentennial Commission marks the site of the original settlement in Northfield, MA. The marker is inscribed:

FIRST SETTLEMENT

HERE, ENCLOSED BY A STOCKADE,
THE FIRST SETTLEMENT WAS
MADE IN 1676. NINE RODS TO
THE WESTWARD A FORT WAS
BUILT IN 1685 AND EIGHT RODS
SOUTHEAST STOOD THE INDIANS'
COUNCIL ROCK.
