This is a plaque marking the execution of three martyrs in East Grinstead High Street in 1556.

Thomas Dungate, John Forman, and Ann Tree were burned at the steak for refusing to renounce their religion.

“Bloody” Queen Mary was on the throne and wanted the country to revert to Catholicism, the faith practised in England until Henry VIII’s Reformation. They met their deaths at the stake, somewhere outside Broadley Brothers, where they had spent their last night on earth imprisoned in the cellars, joining the 284 people known to have been burnt at the stake as heretics during Mary’s ten year reign. - From East Grinstead Town Council

There is a memorial for each of the martyrs near the entrance to St Swithun's Church.

The plaque reads:
The East Grinstead Martyrs

Ann Tree
Were burned to the death on
18th July 1556 in the High Street,
for refusal to renounce their
Protestant faith.
