Allied Plastics in Oklahoma City is the perfect company to make plastic barriers that are in high demand as businesses across the country re-open amid the coronavirus.

As the need continues around the world for materials like masks and gloves, businesses that are reopening are finding a need for a new type of protection.

With just ten employees, Allied Plastic Supply in Oklahoma City has been shipping out thousands of protective barriers since March.

“We’re a small company, or a small branch that operates big," said Sheryl Gipson, who works at the Oklahoma City branch of the Dallas-based company.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the company used the large sheets of acrylic plastic, better known as plexiglass, to fabricate things like marketing materials for big retail companies.

“We produced items that you might see in a Best Buy or Walmart that may hold graphics or could be an acrylic letter that are back lit with LED," Gipson said.

Using the same tools, they started building barriers, leaving holes for credit card machines, or even someone's hands at a nail salon.

In the first month of making them, the company says it sent out about 3,000 barriers to a group of grocery stores.

It started with essential businesses, now each time a new industry gets to reopen more orders come in.

One of the next big shipments could go to Oklahoma casinos.

“We are working with an Oklahoma City game manufacturer to produce the shields that will go onto their machines in the casinos to separate people," Gipson said.

Like so many other essential supplies, the giant reams of plastic that allied uses are in high demand.

“It has skyrocketed worldwide, and you could have material one day and have it committed to somebody tomorrow," Gipson said.

While Alliance Plastic Supply has found success in chaos, Gipson says they have also been able to give back to the community, making face shields for nurses at local hospitals and non-profits like the Homeless Alliance and the City Rescue Mission.
