‘THE BIGGER PICTURE’: MODERNISERING VAN HET ALBERTKANAAL
Met bijna 40 miljoen ton vervoerde goederen per jaar is het Albertkanaal de belangrijkste waterweg in Vlaanderen. Vooral het containervervoer kende het voorbije decennium een steile opgang. In het kader van de capaciteitsverhoging van het Albertkanaal investeert De Vlaamse Waterweg nv dan ook in de verdere uitbouw van het Albertkanaal.

De huidige beperking in doorvaarthoogte en breedte onder de bruggen vormt een knelpunt voor de binnenscheepvaart op het Albertkanaal. De verhoging van de bruggen tot een vrije doorvaarthoogte van 9,10 m maakt het mogelijk om binnenschepen met vier lagen containers veilig en vlot te laten varen. Bovendien krijgt ook Short Sea Shipping op het Albertkanaal zo betere kansen

Het Albertkanaal is vanuit economisch standpunt de belangrijkste waterweg in Vlaanderen en een cruciale hinterlandverbinding voor de haven van Antwerpen naar de Antwerpse Kempen, Limburg en de Luikse regio. Jaarlijks wordt zo’n 40 miljoen ton aan goederen via de binnenvaart vervoerd over dit kanaal. Dat is het equivalent van zo’n twee miljoen vrachtwagens per jaar of 8000 elke dag minder op onze wegen.

EEN NIEUWE BRUG VOOR ZUTENDAAL
De brug in Zutendaal is vervangen door een hogere stalen boogbrug. De herbouw van deze brug maakt deel uit van het project dat tot doel heeft om over de gehele lengte van het Albertkanaal de vrije doorvaarthoogte te verhogen tot minimaal 9,10 meter. De hogere doorvaarthoogte verhoogt het rendement van de binnenvaart in het algemeen en zorgt voor een bijkomende boost voor de containervaart in het bijzonder.

De oude brug werd half oktober 2018 afgebroken om plaats te maken voor een hoger stalen exemplaar met extra aandacht voor veiligheid en fietspaden. De nieuwe brug heeft een totale overspanning van 128 m en een nuttige breedte van 15,60 m op het smalste punt. Het kanaal onder de brug wordt verbreed tot 86 meter. De nieuwe brug is op dezelfde locatie gebouwd als de oude brug. Hierdoor moest de brug een 10-tal maanden onderbroken worden voor het verkeer. Fietsers kregen al iets vroeger, op 7 juni, doorgang. Hierdoor konden we de hinder voor de fietsers beperken en de bijhorende veiligheidsissues op de fietsomleiding oplossen. Het gemotoriseerd verkeer kan vanaf 7 augustus 2019 nu ook terug over de nieuwe brug rijden.

The Albert Canal is the most important waterway in Flanders with nearly 40 million tons of goods transported per year. Container transport in particular has experienced a steep rise in the past decade. In the context of the capacity increase of the Albert Canal, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is therefore investing in the further development of the Albert Canal.

The current limitation in passage height and width under the bridges is a bottleneck for inland shipping on the Albert Canal. The elevation of the bridges to a clear passage height of 9.10 m makes it possible to sail barges with four layers of containers safely and smoothly. Moreover, Short Sea Shipping on the Albert Canal also has better opportunities

From an economic point of view, the Albert Canal is the most important waterway in Flanders and a crucial hinterland connection for the port of Antwerp to the Antwerp Kempen, Limburg and the Liège region. Every year, some 40 million tons of goods are transported by inland shipping over this channel. That's the equivalent of about two million trucks a year or 8,000 fewer every day on our roads.

A NEW BRIDGE FOR ZUTENDAAL
The bridge in Zutendaal has been replaced by a higher steel arch bridge. The reconstruction of this bridge is part of the project that aims to increase the free passage height over the entire length of the Albert Canal to at least 9.10 meters. The higher clearance height increases the efficiency of inland shipping in general and provides an additional boost for container shipping in particular.

The old bridge was demolished in mid-October 2018 to make way for a higher steel copy with extra attention to safety and bicycle paths. The new bridge has a total span of 128 m and a useful width of 15.60 m at its narrowest point. The channel under the bridge is widened to 86 meters. The new bridge was built in the same location as the old bridge. This meant that the bridge had to be interrupted for 10 months for traffic. Cyclists got through a little earlier, on June 7. This allowed us to limit the nuisance for the cyclists and to solve the associated safety issues on the bicycle diversion. Motorized traffic can now also drive back over the new bridge from 7 August2019.
