La Place " La basse ville médiévale, où vivent commerçants et pêcheurs, se développe en contrebas de la ville fortifiée, sur le site du port romain. Au fil du temps, le bourg se déplace légèrement vers le nord et se fixe autour de l’église saint-Nicolas fondée au XIIe siècle.

L’église est restaurée à la fin du Moyen Age, sans doute après le siège de 1492 mené par le roi d’Angleterre Héfirÿ VII qui ruine la basse ville. À partir de 1774, la nef et la façade sont reconstruites. Par souci d’embellissement et d’hygiène, on profite de ces travaux pour déménager le cimetière à l’écart du centre ville, procurant plus d’espace au marché qui s’y tient depuis le Moyen Age.

De récents aménagements ont redonné au lieu son véritable rôle de place au cœur de la basse ville."

The Place "The lower medieval town, where traders and fishermen live, develops below the fortified town, on the site of the Roman port. Over time, the town moves slightly to the north and settles around the Saint-Nicolas church founded in the 12th century.

The church was restored at the end of the Middle Ages, probably after the siege of 1492 led by the king of England Héfirÿ VII which ruined the lower town. From 1774, the nave and the facade were rebuilt. For the sake of embellishment and hygiene, we take advantage of these works to move the cemetery away from the city center, providing more space to the market held there since the Middle Ages.

Recent developments have restored the place to its true role as a place in the heart of the lower town. "
