The St. John County Courthouse and the former Northumberland County Courthouse, both completed in 1829, are the oldest Courthouses in New Brunswick. Unlike the other county courthouses in the Province, the St. John County Courthouse is the only one existing which was constructed of stone before 1900. The Courthouse has become particularly famous for its free-standing spiral staircase.

Among the brick or stone court houses in the province, the present St. John County Court House occupies a unique place. It is the only extant court house constructed before the 1850s of stone (which is reputed to have been imported from England). In fact, it also has the distinction of being one of the oldest court houses standing in the province.
