Mama Bear and her two cubs are a little small to even be considered to be "life-size", and while it's possible that these are just three young bears, the name "Vigilance" is a suggestion that there's a bear with some experience doing the real watching. The title is apt, given that the sculpture is located near the city police department and city hall.
The three bears are atop a slab of granite on a concrete base that is decorated with colored stones. Mama Bear stands behind the two little bears, walking across a rock, while the cub slightly behind her on her proper right side is as watchful as she is. The second cub, seated on his rump, is having a good look, too, maybe more out of youthful curiosity, but there's something lackadaisical about his pose, and one of his back paws drops below the base.
The sculptor's signature is on the rock on mama bear's proper left side, but it is quite weathered and difficult to read. The sign on the front of the base notes the sculpture's title and Delmar Pettigrew as its creator, and while this was a 2004 gift to the city from the Mayor's Art Council, it's possible that the sculpture is a bit older.
