A commemorative plaque for Frank Jewes in the entrance lobby area inside the Guild of Students Building at the University of Birmingham.
The plaque is displayed to honour Frank Jewes who for 20 years was one of the three permanent staff of the Guild of Students at the University of Birmingham.
The text from the plaque is shown below:
"IN MEMORY OF
THE LIFE AND WORK OF
FRANK JEWES
GUILD OF STUDENTS
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
1961 - 1981
PERMANENT SECRETARY 1977 - 1981"
Below the dedication is a small line-drawing depiction of a mermaid holding a mermaid and a comb from the University's Coat of Arm. The Plaque is displayed a stone statue of a mermaid which was rescued from the Mason Science College, the predecessor of the University, in Edmund Street in the city centre.
Unfortunately, as Frank worked and lived in the pre-internet age there are no readily available records of his remarkable service to the Guild and the University of Birmingham.
