A look at Google Maps Street View indicates that this is actually a new hydrant, initially all red, and probably deployed to replace an older hydrant that was right in the middle of construction here. In 2019, Create Ardmore and the Ardmore Fire Department worked together on a beautification effort in which fire hydrants in the downtown Cultural Arts District -- a comparatively small number compared to the over 1600 hydrants that the Ardmore FD has to maintain throughout the area! -- would be given the glamour treatment. As the Ardmore FD requires that the hydrants have a specific color cap -- red, orange, green or blue -- to indicate how much water pressure each tank has behind it, they did the priming work, leaving local volunteers to use their imaginations and minimal guidelines in the effort.

The cap is now orange, and while the hydrant isn't quite as fancy as others around town, the copper color is brilliant, rather eye-catching. It wasn't that long ago that much of Caddo Street was old and in a state of neglect. Today, after so much construction and restoration, this area is becoming a place to wine, dine, and spend money, and maybe it's appropriate that a shiny, brilliant hydrant complements a building that also looks terrific.
