In August 2011, I made a trip to Chambers County to see if I could visit the Site of the Home of General Sam Houston centennial marker. I also wanted to try to find the Cedar Point aluminum marker which should be nearby. I drove down Cedar Point Rd to the place where I thought the 1936 marker might be. At the time, there was no gate, but there was a chain across the driveway to discourage visitors.
I drove back down the road to the store at the corner. I don’t remember how, but somehow I got into a conversation with the lady behind the counter about the markers. I was probably asking about the aluminum marker. She mentioned there was a marker on one of the properties and described the driveway I was just at. She also said she knew the owner and told me it would probably be ok for me to go to the marker.
She then got the property owner on the phone and put me on the phone with her. And I was given permission my the owner over the phone to go see the marker. I was told I could park on the street and hike to the marker. And the distance would be a little over a quarter of a mile. I expressed my appreciation to the person on the phone and to the store representative. I bought some Gatorade to take on the hike as I was also advised to stay hydrated. Plus I was thirsty.
During that conversation, it was mentioned that the property was for sale. I think shortly after that it was sold and visiting that marker has become more difficult. Another friend of mine later tried to go see the marker and was unable to get permission. Looking at the most recent imagery in Google Street View, an actual gate has been installed. I was told that I had apparently “sneaked in on that one.”
