Le Panneau Le hameau du Portel s’était formé, au cours des âges, en petit port de pêche, dernier tronçon de la petite vallée creusée par le ruisseau Tihen, ce qui explique la hauteur de ses falaises. De 1835 à 1851, de nombreux travaux furent réalisés pour construire ce qu’on appelait à l’époque, La Gare maritime.

Il fallut élargir cette petite crique pour ménager un abri plus sûr à la trentaine de flobards qui y accostaient régulièrement : travail de tranchées et pavage du talus aménagé en pente douce pour les bateaux. En 1856, àla création dela commune, les falaises n’étaient pas maçonnées.

Pour lutter contre leur érosion, phénomène déjà récurrent a l’époque, la municipalité d’Athanase Sauvage, maire de 1870 à 1892, fit maçonner les premiers perrés nord et sud, de part et d’autre de l’entonnoir, de 1871 à. 1883. La partie surplombant le bar de la plage fut réalisée en 1903, sous François Gournay-Hédouin, maire de 1900 à 1909.

Les derniers perrés seront consolidés beaucoup plus tard : au nord du Monaclin, début des années 60, sous Jean-Baptiste Gournay, maire de 1953 à 1965, et face aux quais de la Vierge et de la Violette, fin des années 60 sous Maurice Isidore, maire de 1965 à 1971.

The Panel The hamlet of Portel was formed, over the ages, into a small fishing port, the last stretch of the small valley carved out by the Tihen stream, which explains the height of its cliffs. From 1835 to 1851, many works were carried out to build what was called at the time, La Gare maritime.

It was necessary to widen this small cove to provide a safer shelter for the thirty flobards who docked there regularly: working trenches and paving the embankment laid out in a gentle slope for boats. In 1856, when the commune was created, the cliffs were not built.

To fight against their erosion, a phenomenon that was already recurrent at the time, the municipality of Athanase Sauvage, mayor from 1870 to 1892, had the first north and south cracks built on either side of the funnel, from 1871 to . 1883. The part overlooking the beach bar was built in 1903, under François Gournay-Hédouin, mayor from 1900 to 1909.

The last stones will be consolidated much later: north of the Monaclin, early 1960s, under Jean-Baptiste Gournay, mayor from 1953 to 1965, and opposite the quays of the Virgin and the Violet, late 1960s under Maurice Isidore , mayor from 1965 to 1971.
