In order to celebrate the end of the millennium and the beginning of the next, Great Britain established the Millennium Commission to fund various “millennium” projects all over the country. These ranged from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to the Selkirk Wheel in Scotland. During the year 2000, 48 of these projects were featured on an extended series of postage stamps issued in twelve sets of four designs each. This particular stamp, dedicated to the Church Floodlighting Project, was part of a set with the theme of “Spirit and Faith” and ostensibly supplemented the annual Christmas issue.

The Church Floodlighting Trust was set up to administer the grants received from the Millennium Commission, to provide technical support and to ensure the overall quality of the floodlight installations. Of the over 400 churches in England, Scotland and Wales which were floodlit by the project, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in the small village of Over Stowey was chosen for the stamp.

Parts of this church date from the 14th and 15th centuries but it underwent extensive restoration and expansion in the 19th century.
