World Environment Day was created by the UN General Assembly in 1972 as a “vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment.” A different country has been selected to host World Environment Day each year since 1987. In 2017, that country was Canada. The theme for that year was “Connecting People to Nature” and in keeping with that theme, a set of stamps was issued featuring photographs of Canadian national parks and wildlife areas (and one of Ottawa). One of those depicted Hopewell Rocks, a Provincial Park in New Brunswick.

Situated along the coast in the southeast corner of the province, Hopewell Rocks is advertised as one of the best places to experience the phenomenal tides of the Bay of Fundy. These tides, which rise and fall by as much as 56 ft. have eroded the bottoms of the rocks so that some of them resemble the pedestal and stem of a vase. With vegetation growing on their tops, these have been nicknamed “the flowerpot rocks.”

The time between low and high tide is approximately six to six and a half hours so depending on when you visit, the rocks may be completely exposed or mostly submerged (or somewhere in between). The stamp shows the formation known as “Lover’s Arch” at close to high tide. My photo shows the same scene at low tide.
