Maasbeeld (1983) is a sculpture by Auke de Vries in Rotterdam on the northern bank of the Maas between the Willemsbrug and a pillar of the dismantled railway bridge. Locally, the Maas statue is known as De washing line.
The artwork is 182 meters long and consists of steel cable and a number of abstract elements that hang above the water of the Nieuwe Maas. At high tide, one ball floats in the water. The artwork is usually in motion due to the wind and possibly the waves.
From 1983 to 1988, the artwork hung between the (new) Willemsbrug and the old railway bridge. Due to the construction of a railway tunnel, the artwork went into storage until it was given its final form in 1994 after the demolition of the railway bridge. The northern bridge pillar has been retained and serves as an attachment point for the steel cable, which continues to a large block that functions as a counterweight on the other side of the pillar.
