Footage from a hidden camera was enough to identify, locate, and charge a woman who had stolen items from a graveside at Enid Memorial Cemetery.

Article text:

A woman has been charged in connection with the theft of an infant’s grave after the infant’s family caught two individuals on camera stealing items from the gravesite.

Joe Faye Witt, 58, was charged with a misdemeanor count of petit larceny and a misdemeanor count of knowingly concealing stolen property after she was identified stealing items from an infant’s grave at Memorial Park Cemetery on 6405 Memorial Drive, according to court documents. Witt, also known as Joe Faye Kesterson or Joe Faye Harviston, faces up to six months in prison or a fine between $10-$500.

The family of the infant had put up a camera when items were repeatedly stolen from their son’s grave, which caught Faye and another man, later identified as Alfred Boyer, stealing items from the grave on several occasions, according to the North Enid Police department.

North Enid officer James Logsdon was dispatched to a Braum’s restaurant where Witt was identified as the thief. Logsdon spoke with her outside the restaurant, where she said she knew why he was there, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Witt said she and Boyer were driving around and he chose to go to the cemetery, where they got out and walked, according to the affidavit. She said Alfred would comment on a decoration and “would just pick it up and keep it.” She hesitantly admitted to Logsdon that she once took a turtle from one of the graves, Logsdon said.

Witt said she and Boyer had seen an article from Memorial Park Cemetery requesting people to remove items from the graves so they could mow, so they “thought it was okay to just go and take the items off the graves,” according to the affidavit.

Enid Police officers arrived at Braum’s and took her into custody for her outstanding warrants, according to the affidavit.

Witt’s bond was set at $1,000 on Friday, and her next court appearance was scheduled for July 22. A check of court records showed charges have not been filed against Boyer.
