The cenotaph is a small, rectangular slab of red granite, and it reads:
In Memory of
William Clark Lyde
Buried at Sea
Leyte Gulf
Apr. 11, 1925 Nov. 6, 1944
Mr. Lyde was an Aviation Radioman Third Class aboard the U.S.S. Lexington (CV-16) in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On November 6, 1944, he was aboard a torpedo plane that was shot down in Leyte Gulf. He is listed on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines, so presumably, his body was not recovered to receive an actual burial.
