Between Place René-Gaillard, where the association house is today, and yesterday the town hall, and Rue de l'Abbaye which then leads to the town center, there is a street named Ernest-Pérochon , primary school teacher from 1911 to 1920, writer of novels, including a Goncourt prize obtained on December 11, 1920 for his novel Nêne. For the anecdote, this reward had been addressed to him by telegram received in the afternoon, while his pupils were still in class! A prize awarded to Marcel Proust the previous year for his work In the Shadow of Young Girls in Bloom.
Ernest Pérochon therefore arrived in Vouillé in 1911, as evidenced by the plaque which was erected on July 14, 1985 on one of the walls of the town hall, then directed by Yvon Aymé. He then accompanied his wife, née Wanda Houmeau, who had been appointed director of the girls' school, now located rue Ernest-Pérochon and now privately owned. As for her husband, he made replacements, notably at the Gascougnolles school, until the tenure in Vouillé. But the war arises and he is mobilized before the start of the school year, August 2, 1914. Victim of a heart problem, he returns from the front and will not resume his teaching activities in Vouillé until 1918, for 2 years, before to join Niort, in the property bought at 25, avenue de Limoges, to devote himself solely to writing.
In the commune, tributes are paid to him. Besides the plaque and the street, there is a dead end, just near the school and the family home, then the name of the elementary school and a meeting room. As for the memory of the passage of this wealthy regionalist writer, they are to be sought from testimonies of small children of the time. Thus, Raoul Ingrand remembered his teacher with whom he "made the way, and with whom he discussed crops, the price of the farm, but who in class was still writing, tilted on his desk. Entre la place René-Gaillard, où se trouve aujourd’hui la maison des associations, et hier la mairie, et la rue de l’Abbaye qui conduit ensuite vers le centre-bourg, il est une rue du nom d’Ernest-Pérochon, instituteur de la commune de 1911 à 1920, écrivain de romans, dont un prix Goncourt obtenu le 11 décembre 1920 pour son roman Nêne. Pour l’anecdote, cette récompense lui avait été adressée par télégramme reçu dans l’après-midi, alors que ses élèves étaient encore en classe ! Un prix attribué à Marcel Proust l’année précédente, pour son œuvre À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs.
Ernest Pérochon est donc arrivé à Vouillé en 1911, comme l’atteste la plaque qui a été érigée le 14 juillet 1985 sur un des murs de la mairie, dirigée alors par Yvon Aymé. Il accompagnait alors son épouse, née Wanda Houmeau, qui avait été nommée directrice de l’école de filles, située désormais rue Ernest-Pérochon et aujourd’hui propriété privée. Quant à son mari, il effectue des remplacements, notamment à l’école de Gascougnolles, jusqu’à la titularisation à Vouillé. Mais la guerre survient et il est mobilisé avant la rentrée des classes, le 2 août 1914. Victime d’un problème cardiaque, il revient du front et ne reprendra ses activités d’enseignant à Vouillé qu’en 1918, pendant 2 ans, avant de rejoindre Niort, dans la propriété achetée au 25, avenue de Limoges, pour se consacrer uniquement à l’écriture.
Dans la commune, des hommages lui sont rendus. Outre la plaque et la rue, ce sont une impasse, justement près de l’école et la demeure familiale, puis le nom d’affectation de l’école élémentaire et d’une salle de réunion. Quant au souvenir du passage de cet écrivain régionaliste goncourisé, ils sont à rechercher auprès de témoignages de petits enfants de l’époque. Ainsi, Raoul Ingrand se souvenait-il de son instituteur avec qui il « faisait le chemin, et avec qui il discutait des cultures, du prix de la ferme, mais qui en classe était toujours en train d’écrire, incliné sur son pupitre. Il était toujours en pensée ».
