The arena opened September 21, 1996 as Marine Midland Arena at a cost of $127.5 million. It replaced Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium just up Main Street. The arena features three levels of seating and a 80 suites totaling 18,690 seats. The name was changed to HSBC Arena March 17, 1999.
The arena is home to the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League. In the past, the Buffalo Blizzard of the Major Indoor Soccer League, Buffalo Gladiators of the Arena Football League, and Buffalo Stampede of Roller Hockey International also played inside before those teams either moved or folded. Occasionally local college basketball games are played. The first and second rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament have been held in the past, as well as the Frozen Four collegiate ice hockey championships.
