“Salmon and Turtle” was created by David Sidley and donated by Louise and David Sidley to the City of Rossland in memory of their son, River Sidley
River was born on April 6, 1992 and grew up in Rossland. He loved skiing, camping, soccer, and his family and friends. He died of sudden onset arrhythmia at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre on December 9, 2014. He was there finishing his zoology degree. The River Timothy Sidley Memorial Scholarships, supported by family and friends, currently funds two students annually to attend the Fall program at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre.
Salmon and Turtle” is fabricated out of 1 ½ inch thick weathering steel. With the proposed reintroduction of salmon into the Upper Columbia River, (River’s namesake), this sculpture represents the spawning salmon returning to Turtle Island. The images are suggested by indigenous petroglyphs from both interior and coastal sites."
