This is a segment of the shielding used to build the original, 1891 St. Clair Tunnel.
More information about the tunnel itself can be found on Waymarks specific to the tunnel, Wikipedia, and elsewhere on the internet.
The Beach tunneling shield, designed by Alfred Ely Beach, was used to assist workmen in removing material from the route of the tunnel and left a continuous iron tube.
The original 1891 tunnel now sits disused, replaced in 1994 by a larger tunnel capable of handling current rail cars.
In front of this segment of tunnel shielding is a small plaque denoting the tunnel as a National Historic Civil Engineering Site by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. It was dedicated in 1990.
Type: Triumphal (Monument/Memorial)
 Subtype: Other
 Location: Sarnia Railway Station
