Após a implementação de um projeto de recuperação física e paisagística, o monumento e a área envolvente tornaram-se ainda mais agradáveis com a construção de circuitos pedonais e uma área de lazer.
Esta fortaleza árabe do século XII foi definitivamente conquistada, em 1190, por D. Sancho I. Sofreu várias reconstruções, das quais sobressaem as de D. Sancho I, a de D. Fernando e a que foi feita por ocasião das comemorações dos centenários da Independência e da Restauração (1940). Foi classificado como Monumento Nacional a 16 de junho de 1910."
