"Officer Louis O. Cochran

Age: 45
While stopped along U.S. 80 one mile east of Dateland, Patrolman Cochran’s patrol car was struck from behind by another vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver. Upon impact, his vehicle burst into flames killing him. It was the first death in the 25-year history of the Arizona Highway Patrol."
The monument is a rose colored stone slab with the outline of the State of Arizona engraved on it. Within the outline is an engraving of the officer's badge. Below that the date of death. The monument is set upright in the concrete sidewalk of a rest stop on eastbound Interstate 8.
