Marker is affixed to the the walkway of the Chief John R. Jasper Jr. Memorial Fire Station in Atlantic City.

Chief Jasper was the first African American Fire Chief in the City of Atlantic City.

In 1956 he was one of five black firefighters to integrate at Station #1.

John R. Jasper Jr. was the first African American Fire Chief of the
City of Atlantic City. he joined the Atlantic City Fire Department on April 16, 1956 with an assignment to the Maryland Avenue Fire Station and served honorably as a firefighter for 31 years.
He was an original member of the Atlantic City Vulcans, which he helped established and was promoted from rookie to

The City proudly honors John R. Jasper Jr for his years of service to the community, his various accomplishments and his commitment to saving lives by renaming the Maryland Avenue Fire Station Number 1 in his honor.
