Excerpt from the New Orleans City Guide, 1938: "In the center of the square stands the Clay Monument, a bronze statue of the "Great Pacificator". Clay, whose daughter had married a native of Louisiana, was a frequent visitor in New Orleans. Immediately after his death in 1852 a Clay Monumental Association was laid by his fellow Masons. -- The statue stood for forty-one years at the corner of Canal and Royal streets, but in 1901, because of the heavy traffic, it was moved to Lafayette Square, replacing the monument of Benjamin Franklin which had previously stood in the center of the square. The bronze statue stands on a polished granite pedestal with concrete steps on four sides. Clay is represented as he so often appeared in debate, with his sincere, intent look and outstretched hand. The monument was designed by Joel T. Hart of Kentucky, and executed in Munich."

From Wikipedia: "Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the Senate and House. He was the seventh House speaker and the ninth secretary of state. He received electoral votes for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 presidential elections. He also helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. For his role in defusing sectional crises, he earned the appellation of the "Great Compromiser." -- After returning to the Senate in 1849, Clay played a key role in passing the Compromise of 1850, which resolved a crisis over the status of slavery in the territories. Clay is generally regarded as one of the most important and influential political figures of his era." (visit link)
