The CCC was a depression-era work relief program that provided jobs for 23,709 South Dakota workers and 2834 supervisors. The Bureau of Indian Affairs had similar projects which provided work for 4554 Native Americans in South Dakota.
Camp F-2 was part of a National CCC program to renovate forests and build more recreational areas. Projects included tree thinning, pruning, and planting, fire prevention and suppression; rodent, disease, and insect control; grazing land improvement and recreation area development.
The workers renovated dead, diseased, suppressed, and excess trees from hundreds of acres of pine leaving enough trees to produce good quality lumber. They removed flammable debris from forests and nearby areas and quelled forest fires. CCs built firetrails, firebreaks, and roads. They constructed telephone lines to improve communications for fire control which were also used by local residents.
