Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Ameal

Apesar de indefinida a data de fundação da primitiva Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Ameal, este templo foi possivelmente a primeira igreja paroquial edificada na região de Torres Vedras. Sabe-se que em 1310 a Rainha D. Isabel fundou nas dependências da ermida o Hospital de Nossa Senhora de Rocamador, pertencente à Ordem de Santa Maria de Rocamador, o que comprova que estava já edificada no início do século XIV. Em 1337 o hospital era entregue à Confraria dos Alfaiates, que se comprometeu a socorrer e dar albergue aos pobres da região.
Depois da transferência do hospital para a Rua Pelomes, em 1507, a ermida seria completamente remodelada. Entre 1550 e 1560 era executada a campanha de obras que conferiu ao templo a sua traça actual. Em 1767 e 1858 foram executadas novas obras, para aumentar o espaço do templo.
A capela, de planta longitudinal, apresenta uma tipologia maneirista de alguma erudição, num modelo simples e austero. A nave única é precedida por galilé com colunas toscanas e frontão triangular, de inspiração palladiana. Na fachada lateral foi aberto um portal de modelo serliano, assente em colunas toscanas e encimado por frontão triangular.
Nas obras quinhentistas foram reaproveitados alguns elementos anteriores, como a sineira, colocada sobre a fachada lateral, os azulejos mudejares que compõem o lambril da nave, o conjunto de azulejos hispano-árabes que decoram o altar, e a pia baptismal de tipologia manuelina.
O interior possui ainda púlpito de pedra quinhentista e capela lateral dedicada a Nossa Senhora de Rocamador, edificada em 1719, cujo retábulo integra uma imagem policroma da padroeira datada do século XV. A capela-mor é coberta por abóbada de nervuras, e o altar possui retábulo de talha executado em 1767, com imagem da Senhora com o Menino.
Ao acervo da Capela de Nossa Senhora do Ameal pertencia ainda um conjunto de pinturas do século XVI, com representações de São Pedro, São Paulo, São Lourenço e São Sebastião, que actualmente se encontram no Museu Municipal de Torres Vedras.

Although the foundation date of the primitive Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Ameal is undefined, this temple was possibly the first parish church built in the region of Torres Vedras. It is known that in 1310 Queen D. Isabel founded the Nossa Senhora de Rocamador Hospital, belonging to the Order of Santa Maria de Rocamador, on the grounds of the chapel, which proves that it was already built at the beginning of the 14th century. In 1337 the hospital was handed over to the Confraria dos Alfaiates, which pledged to help and provide shelter to the poor of the region.
After the hospital was transferred to Rua Pelomes in 1507, the chapel would be completely remodeled. Between 1550 and 1560 the campaign of works was carried out that gave the temple its current design. In 1767 and 1858 new works were carried out to increase the temple's space.
The chapel, of longitudinal plan, presents a mannerist typology of some erudition, in a simple and austere model. The single nave is preceded by a galilee with Tuscan columns and a triangular pediment, inspired by Palladians. A Serlian-style portal was opened on the side facade, based on Tuscan columns and surmounted by a triangular pediment.
In the 16th century works, some previous elements were reused, such as the bell tower, placed on the side facade, the mudejares tiles that make up the nave's paneling, the set of Hispano-Arab tiles that decorate the altar, and the Manueline baptismal font.
The interior also has a 16th century stone pulpit and a side chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Rocamador, built in 1719, whose altarpiece incorporates a polychrome image of the patron dated from the 15th century. The chancel is covered by a ribbed vault, and the altar has a carved altarpiece executed in 1767, with an image of the Lady with the Child.
The collection of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Ameal also included a set of paintings from the 16th century, with representations of São Pedro, São Paulo, São Lourenço and São Sebastião, which are currently in the Municipal Museum of Torres Vedras.
