"Het beeld is vervaardigd naar ontwerp van Johan Philip Koelman (Den Haag 1818-1893) en werd onthuld in sept. 1873 door Koning Willem III ter gelegenheid van 300 jaar bevrijding van Brielle. Daarmee verwijst het naar de inname van Den Briel in 1572 door de Watergeuzen, die, onder indirecte leiding van Willem van Oranje de Spanjaarden versloegen. Den Briel werd daarmee de "Eersteling der Vrijheid" (Libertatis primitiæ) in de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.
De nimf verbeeldt de vrijheidsgedachte: zij rijst uit zee op, staat op een schelp, wijst met haar linkerhand naar de Maasmonding (vanwaar de Watergeuzen) kwamen en houdt in haar rechterhand het vaandel van Willem van Oranje vast."

"The statue was made to a design by Johan Philip Koelman (The Hague 1818-1893) and was unveiled in Sept. 1873 by King Willem III on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the liberation of Brielle. This refers to the capture of Den Briel in 1572 by the Watergeuzen, who defeated the Spaniards under the indirect leadership of William of Orange, making Den Briel the "Firstfruit of Freedom" (Libertatis primitiæ) in the Eighty Years' War.
The nymph depicts the idea of freedom: she rises from the sea, stands on a shell, points with her left hand to the Maas estuary (from where the Watergeuzen) came and holds in her right hand the banner of William of Orange. "
