Come for the art but enjoy the architecture as well. Canada’s national art museum was designed by renowned Canadian architect Moshe Safdie of Habitat 67 fame. In the early 1980s, Canada held design competitions for two new museums in Ottawa: the National Gallery and the Museum of Civilization (now the Museum of History). Moshe Safdie opted to participate in the design competition for the latter (Museum of Civilization) but was chosen to design the former.

The building, which was opened in 1988, is rather large with over half a million square ft. of floor space. The southern elevation (seen on the stamp) resembles a cathedral with flying buttresses. The large glass cupola, which houses the Great Hall, has views of Parliament Hill and complements the Library of Parliament across the canal.

The stamp was part of a set of four honoring the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. As noted in Canada Post’s press release for these stamps, “the RAIC was formed in 1907 with a mission to establish closer professional ties between provincial groups of architects in Canada.” The stamps were issued on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the RAIC.
