Stained glass west window, created for the Millennium, in St Margaret's church, Hunningham.

A plaque near the window tells us -

"The Hosanna! window was commissioned to mark the millennium and was installed on the 28th December 1999. The Window was designed by Roger Sargent, a local stained glass artist who was asked to produce a design which evokes the emotions of joy and celebration:

I approached the commission by trying to reflect the optimistic hopes of the community and the design was produced following a visit to the church in Easter week. It was a perfect spring day - blue skies, bright sun, the earth springing into life, and a wonderful sense of energy and harmony. The abstract design attempts to capture these joyous emotions and convey them in colour and movement.

The bold gold shapes soaring upwards and outwards represent both the striving of the human spirit for spiritual fulfilment and the triumphant Easter message. The background of deep blue symbolizes baptism and reinforces the theme of joy and celebration appropriate to a work of art Marking 2000 years of Christianity.

The window enjoys an uninterrupted view of the sky, and although it does not receive direct sunlight until late afternoon it is always flooded with strong daylight. This led me to create a design which is visually strong but very simple and at the same time has several layers of meaning. My aim is that as worshippers turn back from the altar to walk down the nave they should experience the dramatic impact of the window as it throws moving bands of coloured light onto the adjacent walls.

Roger Sargent"
