FR Le village antique de Riez possède un patrimoine important. Outre les ruines romaines et un baptistère du VIème siècle, il faut aussi citer la chapelle Saint-Maxime, située sur la colline dominant le village.

Cette hauteur était occupée dès l'Antiquité pré-romaine par l'oppidum gaulois des Reii, d'où provient le nom de Riez. Cette cité devint un centre important dès l'occupation romaine et le restera pendant tout le Moyen-Age.

C'est sur la butte que fut construite au XVIIème siècle une chapelle dédiée à saint Maxime. Un ermitage lui fut accolé. En 1975 il était encore occupé par deux ermites, un capucin et un franciscain, lorsqu'une communauté de trois soeurs clarisses souhaita s'y installer, sur proposition de l'évêque de Digne. Après quelques réticences, le frère Porphyre accepta de leur céder la place.

Saint Maxime de Lérins, ou de Riez (380-458), moine de l'abbaye de Lérins, succéda comme abbé à son fondateur, saint Honorat. Refusant par la suite d'être évêque d'Arles, il finit par accepter d'être celui de Riez en 433. Durant son épiscopat il se signala lors des conciles régionaux de Riez, d'Orange, de Vaison-la-Romaine et d'Arles, où il défendit avec succès le dogme catholique.

Des travaux d'aménagement furent alors entrepris. Aujourd'hui, les sœurs clarisses sont au nombre de six, plus une novice. Leur activité alterne entre la prière, le travail manuel, la méditation et l'accueil de retraitants, dans une vie simple propice à la rencontre du Divin.

Le clocher de la chapelle domine cette dernière et ne porte qu'une seule cloche.
